Geography at Harlyn

Intent

At Harlyn Primary School, we aim to provide the children with opportunities to develop their skills in geography, to investigate and to widen their knowledge of their country and the wider world. We intend for our children to gain a greater understanding and knowledge of the world and their place in it. Children investigate a range of places both in Britain and abroad to help their understanding of the Earth’s physical and human processes.

The geography curriculum at Harlyn is designed to develop knowledge and skills that are progressive, as well as transferable. We encourage children’s curiosity about the world. Our curriculum is intended to ensure that teaching equips pupils with knowledge about diverse places, people, resources and natural and human environments, together with a deep understanding of the Earth’s key physical and human processes.

Our geography curriculum is designed to cover skills, knowledge and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum.

Implementation

The children will identify key knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed in each year group to ensure progression. The geography curriculum is sequenced to build pupils' knowledge, skills and understanding over time. Lessons are engaging, and provide opportunities for children to explore the world through maps, fieldwork, photographs, digital technology and first-hand experiences. Key geographical vocabulary is explicitly taught and revisited to support long-term learning, while prior knowledge is regularly recalled to strengthen understanding.

Children investigate a range of local, national and global locations, developing their understanding of both human and physical geography. Cross-curricular links are made where appropriate, enabling pupils to apply their geographical knowledge in meaningful contexts and develop curiosity about the world around them.  The geography provision is also well resourced and specific resources are mapped to specific year groups and topics to support effective teaching and learning. 

Impact

As children progress through the school, they will develop an appreciation and understanding of their local area and its place within the wider geographical context. The impact of Geography teaching is monitored and assessed in a number of ways. Children will be able to use a range of meaningful geographical vocabulary and have the ability to gain the geographical knowledge and skills to help them explore, navigate and understand the world around them and their place in it.
