PE at Harlyn
Intent
At Harlyn Primary School, our Physical Education curriculum is ambitious, inclusive and designed to inspire every child to develop a lifelong love of physical activity. We aim to provide a broad, balanced and progressive curriculum that develops pupils' physical literacy, fundamental movement skills and sporting knowledge, enabling them to become confident, competent and motivated participants in physical activity throughout their lives.
Our curriculum is carefully sequenced to ensure pupils build on prior learning and develop increasingly sophisticated knowledge, skills and tactical understanding across a wide range of physical activities. Through high-quality teaching, pupils are encouraged to challenge themselves, solve problems, collaborate effectively and demonstrate resilience whilst developing confidence in movement and a positive attitude towards healthy, active lifestyles.
We recognise that every child begins their learning journey from a different starting point. Through high expectations, inclusive practice and adaptive teaching, we strive to ensure that all pupils, regardless of ability or background, are supported and challenged to achieve their full potential. Alongside developing physical competence, we explicitly promote the values of teamwork, respect, fairness, leadership, perseverance and sportsmanship, supporting pupils' personal development and preparing them to become responsible, active citizens.
Our curriculum extends beyond the National Curriculum through a wealth of enrichment opportunities, including competitive sport, leadership roles, outdoor learning and community engagement, enabling pupils to develop valuable cultural capital. We aim for every child to leave Harlyn with the confidence, knowledge and motivation to make informed choices about leading healthy, physically active lives.
Implementation
Our PE curriculum is delivered through the Get Set 4 PE scheme of work, providing a coherent and progressive sequence of learning from Early Years to Year 6. The curriculum has been carefully mapped to ensure clear progression in knowledge, skills and vocabulary, enabling pupils to revisit, practise and embed learning over time.
Lessons are designed to develop pupils' physical literacy by building competence, confidence and motivation across a broad range of physical activities. Pupils participate in high-quality learning experiences across all areas of the National Curriculum.
Teachers use a range of formative and summative assessment strategies to identify pupils' strengths, misconceptions and next steps in learning. Assessment is an integral part of teaching and is used to inform planning, adapt learning and design timely, proactive interventions that enable every pupil to make sustained progress from their individual starting points across all key stages.
Adaptive teaching is embedded throughout our curriculum. Lessons are carefully planned to provide appropriate support, challenge and extension through differentiated questioning, task design, equipment, groupings and levels of competition. This ensures all pupils, including those with SEND, disadvantaged pupils and those with high prior attainment, can fully access the curriculum, experience success and continue to make progress.
Beyond curriculum lessons, pupils benefit from a wide range of extra-curricular clubs, leadership opportunities and competitive sporting events. Harlyn participates in numerous competitions, both intra- and inter-school, providing meaningful opportunities for pupils to apply their learning in authentic competitive environments.
Our partnership with PSD Sports Coaches further enhances curriculum delivery by providing specialist expertise, supporting teacher development and offering additional sporting opportunities through extracurricular clubs and enrichment activities.
Impact
The impact of our Physical Education curriculum is evident through pupils who demonstrate increasing confidence, competence and enthusiasm for physical activity. They develop secure physical literacy, enabling them to move confidently, apply skills across different sporting contexts and participate successfully in a wide variety of physical activities.
Through regular assessment, teachers monitor pupils' progress and use assessment information to inform future planning and targeted interventions. This ensures that learning gaps are identified early, barriers to success are addressed and all pupils continue to make strong progress throughout their primary education.
Pupils leave Harlyn with a secure understanding of the importance of physical activity in supporting both physical health and mental wellbeing. They demonstrate resilience, independence, effective teamwork and respect for others, embodying the values promoted throughout the curriculum.
High levels of participation in PE lessons, extracurricular clubs and competitive sport reflect pupils' positive attitudes towards physical activity and their willingness to embrace challenge. Many pupils continue to participate in local sports clubs and community activities beyond school, demonstrating the lasting impact of our curriculum.
Ultimately, our curriculum equips pupils with the knowledge, skills, confidence and motivation to lead healthy, active lives. They leave Harlyn as physically literate, resilient and aspirational learners who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and are empowered to enjoy lifelong participation in sport and physical activity.
